The sixth edition of the Geoweek 2023 our flagship event- Once again, a huge success. Six busy and hectic days and full of learning. Sixth year running, this year’s Geoweek was conducted from October 26th to 30th at the Tata Assembly Hall in the Nowrosjee Wadia College campus and focused on the theme “Earth Science – Exploring our Planet, Empowering our Future”.
Geoweek 2023 was conducted jointly with the Nowrosjee Wadia College, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Nowrosjee Wadia College, Pune chapter. The event aimed to promote geoscience education and outreach, and featured a range of activities including exhibitions, competitions, workshops, and field trips.
The event was inaugurated on October 26th by Principal Prof. Vasant V. Chabukswar, who emphasized the importance of geoscience education. Other dignitaries also highlighted the significance of geoscience in their speeches.
The event provided immersive learning experiences, including exhibitions, competitions, lectures, and field trips, and aimed to inspire the next generation of geologists, geophysicists, and earth science researchers in the country.
A working model of the "Chandrayaan 3", was the highlight of the Geo-Ex Exhibition. The Geo-Ex also featured models and posters of the Geological Time Scale, a globe model with geological wonders, The exhibition ran for three days, from October 26th to 28th.
A Geoart and Rock art painting competition was held on October 27th, encouraging students to showcase their creativity and imagination with an underlying Geoscience theme. The exhibition also showcased the selected entries from Geosnap our popular international photo competition.
On October 29th, a field visit the ‘Geotrail’ was organized to sites in Gunjale, Vambori, and Nighoj, where students were exposed to the various features of the Deccan Volcanic Province. Notable features were the frozen waterfall at Wambori (Calc-Tufa deposits), the lava channel at Gunjale and the famous potholes at Nighoj
The event concluded with a valedictory lecture by Dr Suvrat Kher on the ‘Geology of the Himalayas’, followed by a Prize Distribution Ceremony. Over 300 students participated in the event, gaining practical geological knowledge and skills through the various activities.
The key to the grand success of the event was the Enthusiasm, Dedication, Ownership and excellent Teamwork shown by the team of young student volunteers of Nowrosjee Wadia College. The Geoweek would not have been possible without their keen participation and involvement. A big thank you to them.
Geoweek is the flagship event of the Centre for Education and Research in Geosciences and is organized every year since 2017 to raise awareness and spark interest in the field of Geosciences among students and non-geologists.
