The countdown begins… for our annual event, the Geoweek. We are back with a bigger and better celebration this year. A week full of learning and fun activities…
After the grand success of Geoweek 2017 and other learning events organized by CERG in 2017, it’s time for Geoweek 2018. This year’s Geoweek is being organized from 08th to 13th Oct 2018 and has much more to offer than last year. The overall theme for the Geoweek this year is “Earth Science and Society”
Geoweek 2018 is being organized in association with the International Institute for Information Technology(I2IT), Hinjewadi, Pune and Fergusson College, Pune
The Geoweek 2018 is a weeklong event conducted under the auspices of the “Geoscience for All” initiative, a volunteer initiative of professional Earth Scientists to promote Earth Literacy – translating information on Earth science into a language and learning that can be understood by the common man.The week will see a range of activities like Talks, Exhibitions, Contests and Workshops. The highlight of the week is an exhibition which is being held on 8th, 9th and 10th of October 2018 at the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery on Ghole Road.
The Exhibition features an exhibition of Geosciences projects, prepared by school students from various schools in and around Pune. Also, on display will be the top 25 entries of breathtaking photographs submitted to the International Photo Contest from Geoscience lovers from across the world.
The highlight of the event will be the exhibits from the personal collection of minerals, fossils and semiprecious stones of Mr. M.F. Makki, who has made this huge collection over the last 50 years. The display will include samples from Bolivia, Morocco, Mexico and many other places from the world. Mr. M.F. Makki will also deliver a talk on ‘Fascinating & Colorful world of Minerals’, wherein he will elucidate the method of collecting and processing minerals.
The week also features a two-day workshop titled – ‘Discover GIS’ at I2IT, Hinjewadi. This will cover basics of Open source GIS software for Geoinformatics (FOSS4G) and some of the recent tools of FOSS4G for monitoring, evaluation and research needs.
The Geoweek celebrations and the exhibition will be inaugurated by Prof (Dr) N.J. Pawar, former Vice Chancellor of Shivaji University, Kolhapur and presently Director, Dr. D.Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune at 10:30 am on Monday, 8th October 2018 at the Raja Ravi Varma Art Gallery. Prof (Dr) Ravindrasing Pardeshi, Principal of Fergusson College, and Prof (Dr) Venkatesh Raghavan, Osaka City University, Osaka, Japan will be the Guests of honor at the opening ceremony.
The valedictory function of the Geoweek will be held on Saturday, 13th October 2018 at 5:30 pm at the Firodiya Hall, Fergusson College Campus, Pune. Mr. Pradeep Chellappan, Consulting Geologist, and adjunct faculty at Wadia College, will deliver a talk on ‘Story of Oil’. This will be followed by prize distribution for the various contests held during the Geoweek.
