GEOSNAP - THE PHOTO CONTEST

1st - ANUJ RAINA

Title: Partial Flamboyance and Eclipse

Location : Khadirbet, Kutch, Gujarat

The partial solar eclipse was captured at Khadirbet, or Khadir Island, belonging to Kutch District in Gujarat. The island houses Dholavira, an archaeological site related to the Indus Valley civilization (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a plant fossil site, and an important biodiversity point with rich flora and fauna. The island is surrounded by salt water, the level of which depends on sea tides and monsoon rains. The receding water level leaves behind vast white sand or salt flats, which entice mass tourism. The area is also important for flamingos; both greater and lesser flamingos nest there in large numbers. Khadir Island acts as a corridor for migrating birds entering Gujarat and India. All these archaeological, palaeontological, geological, and ecological features make this island a unique and significant place in India.
