Pictures from the Geoweek 2021 Geotrail

As a part of the Geoweek 2022 celebrations, we have another session of our very popular Geoscience based field trips – the Geotrails.  Following the theme of Geodiversity & Geoparks, our trail not only covers Geology, but also some history and the ancient culture.

This time we traverse the Dive ghat enroute to Malhargad and the historical Sangameshwar temple from where we proceed to the Shirwal caves. Diveghat exposes lava flows of pahoehoe and aa type, colonnade and entablature structures, clear flow contacts, radial joints in the upper flows and a dyke intruding the lava pile. From the top of the Ghat section we proceed to Malhargad, a hill fort near Saswad.  Also known as Sonori fort due to the village of Sonori being situated at its base, the fort was named after the god Malhari and was the last fort built by the Marathas, in 1775.  There are two temples constructed next to each other - the smaller for Lord Khandoba, and the larger for Lord Mahadeva. From the top of this fort, the city of Jejuri and Parvati Hills can be seen. The fort was built by Bhivrâo Yashvant and Krishnaji Mâdhavrâo Pânsê, a Peshwa Sardar, who was the chief in charge of Tofkhana of the Peshwas.

After a leisurely lunch we proceed to the Sangameshwar temple at Saswad, a 12-13th century temple at the confluence of Chamli and Karha rivers. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is a mix of old architecture and later day modifications and renovations. The temple’s Shikhara (dome) has hundreds of small sculptures of deities carved in consecutive layers.  The main temple has two deepmalas on either side, and an unexpectedly large and colorfully painted Nandi in the middle of the temple hall.

From here, we get onto the bus and travel to Shirwal to see the Buddhist caves there. Shirwal Caves are a group of 15 Buddhist caves located in a small village called Shriwal, 48 km south of Pune, India.  One is Chaitya and 14 Caves represent Vihara. All caves are plain and belong to the Early Buddhist schools of the early phase of Buddhism.
