Krishnanunni Memorial Essay Contest

Sri K. Krishnanunni, was a former Director-General of the Geological Survey of India. Joining as a Geologist (Jr) in the Geological Survey of India he retired after reaching the pinnacle of the organization as Director General. His professional career spanned 36 years in the Geological Survey of India and the Department of Space. An intellectual and visionary and a very simple human being, he was humane and very informal in his interactions.  He  passed away in 2020 at his native place, Palakkad in Kerala.  On his demise, many of his earlier colleagues and admirers formed the Krishnanunni Memorial trust (KMCT) to perpetuate his memory and propagate his vision.

The main objective of the KMCT is the propagation of scientific information in earth sciences, space sciences and geology through various means like meritorious awards, memorial lectures and publishing scientific papers and incubating young talent to carry out research, etc

As a part of it’s mission to propagate scientific information in earth sciences, the KMCT in association with the Centre for Education & Research in Geosciences (CERG) is organizing an Earth Science theme based “Essay competition” specifically for school students from Kendriya Vidyalayas and Army Public Schools.  The top three winners will be awarded attractive cash prizes of Rs. 15,000, Rs 10,000 & Rs. 5,000/-

The objective of this contest is to celebrate and encourage students to articulate important areas of Earth Sciences and build awareness of the importance of Earth Science in sustainability. 

GUIDELINES

  • The topic of the essay is “Role of Geosciences in Sustainable Development
  • The essay contest is open to students from grades 7th to 9th of Kendriya Vidyalayas and Army Public schools.
  • Each essay must be original, authentic, unpublished, the sole property of the entrant, and not previously submitted in any other contest.
  • The essay must not be more than 600 words. Longer essays may be rejected unread.
  • A typed essay in English of not more than 600 words, focusing on the topic " Role of Geosciences in Sustainable Development".
  • Instructions on submitting the essay will be sent in the confirmation email which the student will receive after registration.
  • All registrations must be received by 12th of January 2023 and essays uploaded by 15th of January 2023.
  • The top three winners will be awarded attractive cash prizes of Rs. 15,000, Rs 10,000 & Rs. 5,000/- and a Certificate of Merit.   All finalists will also be awarded certificates of merit.
  • The essays will be judged by a panel of geoscientists primarily on the relevance to the topic and other aspects like grammar, content, presentation, creativity. The top 10 to 12 essays will be shortlisted for final evaluation.
  • The winner's and finalists' names will be posted on the KCMT & CERG websites. The winning essays will also be featured on the websites.
  • The Contest comprises of three steps: Online registration, Online submission of Essay & Short 'One-on-one discussion with the finalists.
  • Date and time and other details will be intimated to the finalists and online interview /discussion will be conducted by a panel of Earth scientists.  The evaluation will have a structured format with 5 to 6 parameters
